It was16c today and, even though the wind was cold, I braved the beach for a couple of hours – have a weeks reprieve from commuting to London. Should have been digging over my allotment but I looked at some gardening books for inspiration instead. The blue sky and bright sun-light were impressive for April . There is more to follow this weekend although Scotland is experiencing snow and 5c – the joys of living in the UK!

Decided to pay a visit to one of my favourite local nurseries. Some girls go mad over dress shops, even shoes but, for me, there is nothing like a nursery for sheer enjoyment.
Athelas Plants, located in the beautiful East Sussex countryside offers a range of tropical, architectural and exotic plants that have been individually selected by owners Matt and Nigel. These guys have a real passion for providing something a bit different and offer an impressive display of high quality and very reasonably priced plants.

They have just launched a great new web-site where you can easily search and view plants on-line – delivery charges are very reasonable.Nigel told me they are having one of their busiest Aprils ever due to the good weather and demand for palms is particularly high – not surprising when you have a look at their plants and prices http://www.athelasplants.co.uk/palm-trees-c17
As well as the impressive plants, the site has good advice on soils, planting tips and information about hardiness. They have introduced the traffic light system to help identify which plants are totally hardy and which will need looking after if we have another winter like 209/10.http://www.athelasplants.co.uk/hardiness-i47
My favourite were the beautiful wisteria in full flowerand giving off an amazing aroma that attracted busy bees into the poly tunnels.Visiting Athelas confirmed that shopping for plants is now absolutely my favourite pastime over fashion hunting – amazing colours combined with heavenly scents takes some beating on a beautiful sunny day.
