Australia is divided into eight different gardening zones because of the huge variations in temperature and rainfall across this massive continent.

Altitude variations or geographical features within each zone modify temperatures and rainfall patterns, breaking up the eight zones even further.
To complicate the issue, climate change is resulting in evolving milder winter conditions in some areas and longer, harsher winters in others. Last summer, extreme heat or rain events played havoc with a lot of gardens across Australia, and the extent of further changes related to extreme weather events is impossible for anyone to accurately predict.

However, Australia can be divided into three basic gardening or growing zones; Warm, Cool, and Temperate The zone divisions are based on the types of plants that will grow in a moderately irrigated garden in each zone http://aussieorganicgardening.com/?p=298

With such a huge landmass and a history of drought, Australian gardeners began facing up to the effects of climate change on their gardens many years ago. http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s1201187.htm

Sir David Attenborough says that people have a ‘huge moral responsibility towards the rest of the planet’ .

As a world renowned scientist and the greatest living documentary film maker, we must listen to the warnings by this great man and think about how we can respond to the urgent need for everyone of us to care more about the state of our planet.

Sir David believes that people in towns and cities are losing touch with the “realities of the natural world”, which is putting the future of the planet at risk. The veteran wildlife presenter also highlights that due to rapid urbanisation over the past 60 years, a growing number of people are not regularly coming into contact with the natural world. http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2011/dec/01/nature-urbanisation-david-attenborough

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9ob9WdbXx0

Nature is a powerful force and and is the one thing in our lives that we just cannot control.Gardening is a great way for individuals to connect with the earth and nature and will play a crucial role in adapting our lives to climate change both now and in the uncertain future.

In great contrast to my story yesterday about why the UK is falling behind its commitments to cut its carbon footprint, todays blog confirms why Australia is attempting to lead the world into a carbon free future.

The Australian parliament has just passed laws that impose a price on carbon emissions in one of the biggest economic reforms in a decade.

KEY POINTS

* The Clean Energy Act will force the country’s 500 worst-polluting companies to pay a tax on their carbon emissions

* Tax to take effect mid-2012 before moving to a carbon-trading scheme in mid 2015

* Price initially set at A$23 ($23.78) per tone

* Aims to cut carbon pollution by 159 million tones by 2020 or by 5 percent based on year 2000 levels

* To spend A$9.2 billion to help heavy polluting industries like steel and aluminum, and close dirtiest power stations

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-15632160

Wikipedia explains carbon taxes and their role in cutting carbon emmissions :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_tax

One of the reasons that Australiawants to lead the world in challenging carbon emmissions is that although it only accounts for 1.5% of the world’s emissions, it is the developed world’s highest emitter per head of population thanks to its relatively small population.

Australia is already experiencing some very serious effects of climate change http://www.cleanenergyfuture.gov.au/australia%E2%80%99s-carbon-pollution-the-global-context/

If you are reading this blog from Australia check out how future increases in temperature might affect your state: http://www.climatechangeinaustralia.gov.au/

According to a report in the Independent newspaper today, Britain’s carbon emissions grew faster than the economy last year for the first time since 1996, as a cash-strapped population relegated the environment down its league of concerns and spent more money keeping warm.

The rise in Britain’s so-called carbon intensity increases the danger that the country will miss legally binding targets on reducing emissions, warns PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the consultancy behind the report.

Furthermore, it found that Britain’s rising carbon intensity is part of a worldwide trend which threatens to push global warming above a two-degree Celsius increase on pre-industrial levels.

This is the temperature that the G8 group of leading economies has pledged not to breach in the hope of avoiding the worst consequences of climate change.

Britain’s GDP increased by just 1.3 per cent in 2010, while its carbon emissions jumped 3.5 per cent, resulting in a 2.2 per cent rise in so-called carbon intensity.

If Britain wants to hit its legally binding target of reducing emissions by 34 per cent, on 1990 levels, by 2020, it will need to cut its carbon intensity by 5.6 per cent every year, PwC said.

Congratulations to Australia which recorded a 10.9 per cent decline. http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/green-living/hardup-uk-puts-climate-change-on-back-burner-6258246.html

TED recently invited Kitchen Gardens International to present their ideas for a world where gardening and growing our own food is a priority. The presentation by Roger Doiron is entitiled A Subversive Plot: How to Grow a Revolution in Your Own Backyard is very American in style but the content makes absolute sense and will hopefully inspire everyone to think about this subject on a practical level and make what Roger talks about start to happen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ezuz_-eZTMI
