Dahlias flower on and on

p1030529

The nights may be getting colder and the days shorter – its dark at 18.30 now – but there are still some wonderful dahlias braving the changing seasons . I spotted these beauties bathing in the Autumn light in London a few days ago.

Sunlight is vital to dahlia growth and flower production. They need a minimum of 8-10 hours of direct or slightly filtered light which means they do particular well with the recent sunny Autumns in the UK. Always plant them in a bright spot as deep shade promotes lanky growth and few blooms. They are one of my favourite plants as they are REALLY easy to grow – anyone can get results providing you give them a deep loamy soil. With 55, ooo varieties to choose from, the choice is simply endless – check out this very useful site http://www.jrg-dahlias.co.uk/how_to_grow_dahlias.htm
