Great excitement – today I was given a patch of soil at The Village allotments by my local buddy, Councillor Steve Wallis who just happens to be the portfolio holder for the Environment at Eastbourne Borough Council.
It is nearly a year since I first discovered the Village with its totally unique set up of Victorian houses in a square which were originally built by the Duke of Devonshire for the workers that built Eastbourne pier in the late 19th century.http://www.myclimatechangegarden.com/blog/the-village-update
My patch of soil may not look much at the moment but this is where my journey into growing my own veg in the soil rather than in pots like last year really begins.Really excited about choosing what to grow, preparing the soil, planting out – all those things I have been reading about and now get the chance to put into practice.Hope I can deliver some good crops like the last of the winter leeks and carrots harvested by Steve today and a pot of delicious raspberry jam made from last years summer harvest.
The Times have just published an excellent on-line guide to setting up a veg garden. It sets out all the things I am going to have to start thinking about – watch this space for news on what I decide to grow.
